  • "Well, he ain't no oil painting!," noted one. "He's put on 10 years," complained another. A third claimed the only detail they got right was his trademark blue tie.

Stung by the criticism, museum directors now agree that the wax Macron is perhaps a little unkind. "A tense and anguished face, a frozen statue that doesn't 'live', this is not beautiful, something just doesn't work,” admitted Grevin's director, Yves Delhommeau.

He added that Mr Macron could have made the sculptors’ life easier by agreeing to meet them and have his face scanned to avoid “getting the proportions wrong”. Instead, they had to work off photos.

"We succeeded with Donald Trump, there was no reason to think we couldn't do the same with Emmanuel Macron, even though more distinctive faces, older and more exaggerated, are often the easiest to do," said Mr Delhommeau.

Mr Macron's wife Brigitte, 65, has not authorised the museum to make her statue, and "after what's happened with her husband, this probably isn't going to bring her around," he confessed.
